Xol Archives

Memory bearing as method.

Opening

Xol Archives approaches the archive as living material: something to be researched, interpreted, activated, and carried forward. Through archival research, curriculum design, and learning experiences rooted in Black performance lineages and embodied ethics, this pathway helps memory move.

Guiding Philosophy

Xol Archives is built on the belief that archival materials are not static records, but living cultural artifacts that carry forward the knowledge, language, and spiritual practices of the communities that created them.

The cultural philosophy underlying this offering is called Mill Country Gothic, a term I coined to specify and connect elements of Black cultural production across the industrial and postindustrial landscapes of the Rust Belt, the rivers, the East Coast, and Appalachia. In the same way Southern Gothic names a distinct regional aesthetic shaped by its own land, histories, and hauntings, Mill Country Gothic bears a cultural logic and aesthetic of its own, one that emerges from a different terrain, a different pressure, and a different set of spiritual inheritances. Our steel mills are plantations. Our baptisms happen in riverwaters, not bayous, and they ask something very different of us when the water freezes over. Our crossings are forged on bridges, through tunnels, and along rail lines, while theirs unfold on porches, pass through swamps, and fade down back roads.

Mill Country Gothic unfolds through three branches: Memory Bearing, Industrial Somatics, and Rust Belt Ritual. Memory Bearing names the mind through the intentional carrying of cultural memory, lineage, and thought. Industrial Somatics names the body through the lived physical realities of Black life shaped by migration, labor, industrial terrain, and the residue those conditions leave behind. Rust Belt Ritual names the heart through the spiritual practices carried north during the Great Migration and remade within new geographies, new pressures, and new communal forms. Together, these branches align with the mind, body, and heart architecture that runs through all of Xol Labs.
